Earlier on in the semester I remember someone making a post on the blog. I don't remember who, so please forgive me. But, the post said something along the lines of how this person had recently enjoyed reading and writing since this class has begun.
I am not one who has ever really enjoyed reading. That goes the same for writing. I have always dreaded "papers" and especially "research papers." It is interesting to me how throughout this semester I have enjoyed the reading we have done and also the writing. There it is, I said it... I have somewhat enjoyed it!
I believe the reason for this is because this is the first English class I have had where the focus has been in developing my thoughts and writing a paper that is enjoyable to read. The english class I took prior to this one focused on one thing and one thing only: grammar. I know grammar is important in writing, but really, like Dr. Westover says, it doesn't matter how good your grammar is if no one wants to read your paper because it doesn't say anything interesting.
Anyway, basically this class has given CPR to a desire to write that was on its last heartbeat. Any one else concur? (I don't know how to spell concur.)

I agree with you Quinn. I had his class last semester and we really got in to how we are to write and how we can really feel about these stories, papers, etc. This class has really helped me make my papers more clearer and put more of my thoughts and feelings into these assignments that we have. It has really helped me to be a better writer.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you! I always seem to dread taking english because it seems to be the same old thing just writing pointless papers! However, this semester it seemed like Dr. Westover was actually interested in helping us develop our writing instead of just telling us what we did wrong like in our grammar and such. It also helped that instead of writing a million papers we were able to focus on writing two well developed papers. It has helped me so much to become a better writer and love writing a little more :)
ReplyDeleteI am actually the one who made that post and i am glad to see i am not the only one who has grown to love writing..the only thing i hate to write is stories..yuck..but since i have had both college English classes from Dr .Westover i have also grown to love writing more..his kind of writing makes you think outside the box and use what you know to be persuasive..and does anyone else LOVE the fact that we got to write on our own topics?
ReplyDeleteI for one have enjoyed writing to an extent. I think what has always helped me is that I try to write my paper in a way that I would talk about the topic in a speech. So it's not to informal but I am also putting my feelings and thoughts on the paper not someone else. The only time I hate writing is when a fascist dictator of a teacher puts on due boundaries on the paper they have assigned. If you don't want plagiarized papers don't make it insanely difficult not to.
ReplyDeleteI've always loved to read but I never realized how much I miss in a story until we discuss them in class. I love all the different perspectives that come up in class and I often think- oh I never thought about it like that or wow I didn't catch that interpretation. So yeah this class has been great!
ReplyDeleteI agreed with Stacey the first time she posted that because I have really enjoyed the reading in this class. I used to never read books because I always could find other things that more interested me to do with my time. After this last paper we wrote I have been excited for finals to be over so that I could pick a good book on parenting and start reading. I learned quite a bit from this research paper and am ready to continue and learn more. This has been the best English class I have taken. I have enjoyed all the discussions and hearing my classmates opinions on the readings. It cool how all of our brains work so differently :)
