isn't that ironic...
I thought it was really quiet funny that her husband wasn't actually dead. The majority of the story was focused on how happy she was that she was now free from his oppression or whatever, and then at the end after all the day dreaming he comes walking though the front door and she kills over, thats pretty funny. I think that i have made a connection with all the stories that we have read so far... i believe this pretty much sums it up "back in the day marriage sucked and women got the short end of the stick" correct me if i am wrong lol, but that seems to be the common theme in each of these stories.

I was surprised her husband wasn't dead.. because her sources seemed to be so sure..it seemed like she was happy about him being dead..so happy in fact that she dies?..lol.. she was free enough after her husbands announced death to see the beauty of life and really start living. "But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome. There would be no one to live for her during those coming years;she would live for herself."
ReplyDeleteGoing along with that quote i agree with you about the growing theme of female oppression during the time these pieces of literature where written. I would have hated living in a male dominated society, not having the right to think for myself and being thought of as nothing more than an unintelligent woman that can do nothing but marry well, not necessarily for love and be a mother. Don't get me wrong motherhood is something to be valued because it is hard work and woman have a natural ability to be loving and caring but, woman have minds as well. Can you imagine living in a time that your rights as a person where in the hands of others and you couldn't do anything on your own including think?
Also i could not imagine marrying for monetary things like money or convenience and that was a common flaw of this age in society portrayed through writing. Like Ms. Linde in a dolls house marrying because he had a lot of money and it could help her mother and siblings if she married him. But i guess that is just the difference in what is accepted or not, culture and time.
