Whenever there is a storm, or even just rain for that matter, once it is finished beating upon the earth it leaves everything new and cleansed. For a short time it comes, it's intense, then before you know it it's over and its like it never happened.
It's interesting to me how in that very same way Alcee storms into Calixta's house, the emotions and intensity rise, they satisfy their hormones, and before you know it, everything is as it once was. They both act is if nothing happened, neither one haunted by his or her conscience.
I believe that with the passing of the storm everyone was happy. Their is no sign of remorse on the part of Calixta nor on the part of Alcee. They both enjoyed the sudden events that took place. Bobinot is happy because upon arriving home he is embraced warmly by Calixta, there being no need for the any of the excuses he was stirring about. The little boy has no idea what's going on and is therefore happy as well. Alcee's wife is granted more time away seeing as how her husband is now pacified.
Apparently happiness abounds with the passing of the storm. Would it be that way if everyone was aware of what had just occured?? Most likely not, but the adulterous secret is washed away with the storm.

I agree with Quinn's post but...
ReplyDeleteWhen something scary happens, like a huge storm people begin to show different emotions that usually would be kept secret under any other circumstance. Alcee and Calixta were in a vulnerable state which made old feeling return.
I believe the statement with the passing of the storm everyone was happy also. I'm not sure if everyone is happy in the same way. I think Calixta is happy because her family is back and safe. I feel though that Alcee is happy because he is hoping something might come from the incident during the storm. He wrote his wife telling her to stay longer which could be a sign that he wants to get closer with Calixta again. He hopes that since they got those old feelings back that it will lead to something else. Calixta seemed very happy to be back with her family but maybe the storm got her thinking about other things.
I too believe that passion builds with a storm's forceful winds and beating rains. Something about the wildness of the weather makes us want to respond likewise, by doing something that we wouldn't do normally. Most of us have gone out and danced in a summer's rainstorm or gone puddle jumping and perhaps if Bobinot had been home in time then it could have been him and Calixta. But it wouldn't have been with the same freedom, for they have a son in the home and they would have had more restraints because they didn't normally behave like that together. The storm dances so freely that while it continued it seems that Alcee and Calixta got to be just as free, without even any thoughts of right or wrong.
